In many cases, having an individual present who knows how to use a defibrillator (or AED machine), should somebody undergo cardiac arrest, can literally mean the difference between life and death. If defibrillation can take place within 5 minutes of the casualty having stopped breathing - and, within that time, CPR is performed - the chance of survival is 75%.
